The first printing of the first trade edition of the first illustrated edition of this work. The novella had first appeared in 1937.
With numerous full page and vignette illustrations by American illustrator Wesley Dennis, who is best known for this work, and for his illustrated edition of Anna Sewells Black Beauty. With beautifully illustrated endpapers by Dennis also.
This episodic novella by the author of East of Eden and The Grapes of Wrath is arranged as four tales; The Gift, The Great Mountains, The Promise, and The Leader of the People.
CONDITION
In the publishers original cloth binding, with pictorial paper onlay to front board. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Light handling marks to pictorial onlay. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
