In fair condition. Embossed leather boards are scuffed at edges & worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine lacking - binding exposed. Gilt lettering on spine slightly rubbed, but overall bright and clean. All edges gilt. Front hinge beginning to split at tail. Gift inscription found on front fly-leaf. From engraved title page to 12 pp are detached from binding. Toning throughout text-block, some instances of age-staining and finger-soiling. Binding is intact, but fragile at hinges. Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was an American novelist and short story writer. His works often focus on history, morality, and religion. Hawthorne usually centers his writing on New England, & many feature anti-Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic movement, and, more specifically, dark romanticism. Several of the eight stories published in this annual were also collected for Volume I of "Twice-Told Tales." Other contributions in this edition of "The Token" are by Hannah F. Gould, Ludia Sigourney, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Sarah Whitman, supposedly her first appearance in print. Many exciting authors and stories, many of which are first appearances!
