1. Identification: Spondylus candidus (Lamarck, 1818), Juan de Nova Island, Mozambique Channel, attached to debris in 22m depth, Paris shell show 1989, live taken specimen shell.

Description: When the species was originally described the author obviously has not seen my piece, otherwise he would have hardly chosen the taxon name candidus, which translates to the snowy white one. Of course intense orange coloration is known to occur occasionally in all Spondylus and it may depend on genetics or feeding habits, and it varies from extremely rare to limitedly frequent according to species; naturally, the Spondylus candius is mostly white and the best specimens display vividly colored juvenile area and are found near Samoa and the Society Islands on reefs in shallow water, but this intense burgundy red piece probably comes as a surprise even to the specialized collector. From the southernmost habitat of the species, an isolated population in the Mozambique Channel, collected on coral reef in protected cove. Impressive specimen of mature size and extreme saturation, extremely heavy with thick valves, and astonishingly a piece of uniform saturated deep natural color of of cool red that comes with vibrant intensity.
