I am spanning millennia but there is much to say about curio cabinets filled by the rich and powerful with valuable naturalia like those still preserved in public collections housing treasures from Wittelsbach family, and we know that Nautilus cups have been fashionable drinking vessels adorning the tables at the most exuberant festivities the Medici family have ever hosted. And of course there are the Dutch famous for their trade and wealth and good taste, they became notorious for the tulip fever paying staggering prices for these plants, but there also was what I may call a Shell Fever in those times when beautiful exotic species like Thatcheria mirabilis would fetch easily amounts that by today would be more than enough to acquire an apartment with Central Park View. I mention all this to say that you are indeed dignified as a collector dedicating your interest to seashells, but there is more to it and now I want to make my point: after all we are dealing here with natural resources produced by living animals and that puts us in responsability. My answer is simple, Yes, I do love shells, and Yes, I want to keep a low impact in the environment, making an active effort to preserve and protect the Sea, and study the ecosystem giving us more knowledge and better understanding of life under water. 1. Identification: Spondylus senegalensis (Schreibers, 1793), Les Almadies, Dakar, Senegal, on rocks in 6m depth, ex Clarkson 1991, live taken specimen shell.
2. Description: This shell is intense Burgundy red color, put it on your table and you will probably enjoy it even more than a great vintage! Red color of such intensity is only to be found in a handful of taxa among seashells, the most famous obviously being the Pecten magnificus, and lesser known but just as desirable are these Spondylus which are very hard to find, and in my opinion much in need of further scientific study which will probably produce ssp ranking to this local endemic population, or it may even be recognised as a new taxon because intermediate forms are not recorded so far. They grow in small colonies which are widely dispersed and most individuals are beyond reach to be recovered, and then there is the additional problem of this shell which consists in regularly being attached to the naked rock (black volcanic rock which is extremely strong) with the larger part of the lower valve which makes it impossible to collect these pieces. Here comes an exceptionally beautiful shell showing the red color in its hottest and most brilliant hue, and the shell has the additional benefit of being free grown thus most desirable for its large body of irregular and wide shape with plentiful (for the species) spines along pronounced ridges. Definitely a treasure among my shells, this piece is a majestic and very mature beauty with a perfect margin and superb color. From a famousFrench collection this piece was with C.Zand at the 1999 Paris Shell Show.
