This album, made in conjunction with the filming of David Byrnes underrated film True Stories, is absolutely amazing from start to finish. This may not be the Talking Heads best album, but it doesnt fall short by much, and it definitely features a few of the bands most touching and emotionally moving songs. It is both unfortunate and bewildering that this album is looked at as something of a negative chapter in the bands history. A medley group of performers (including John Goodman) sang these songs in the film True Stories, and I understand that David Byrne really wanted to release a soundtrack of the movie players recordings but was talked into recording the songs himself alongside his then-fracturing Talking Heads band members.

Wild Wild Life is the best known song from this album, as both the song and the video got plenty of air time (and you get both the original version and an excellent extended remix here); Love For Sale also met with some success as a single release. Im here to tell you these are not even the best songs on this album. Puzzlin Evidence, Hey Now, and Papa Legba are great but uninspired, but the second half of the album is incredible. Radio Head is the Talking Heads at their eccentric, fast-paced best. People Like Us, sporting a country-type sound, is more laid-back but no less compelling; it is a true song of empowerment and a virtual theme song for "normal" people who only want someone to love. City of Dreams is a touching concluding song that reinforces all the good feelings inspired by both the album and the movie, but even this poignant piece pales in comparison to the almost indescribably good Dream Operator. The Talking Heads arent really known for songs of a soft, tender nature, but Dream Operator is one of the most beautiful songs Ive ever heard.

Put all of these tracks together, mixing a number of different styles in the uniquely David Byrne-inspired way, and you have what I consider one of the best albums of the 1980s. This album never fails to make me feel better and, more importantly, to feel better about myself. This is an album for the average man or woman going about his/her life, wanting nothing more than to be loved and find contentment in his/her own heart. It may be more pop-oriented than earlier, vintage Talking Heads albums, but True Stories remains one of the best LPs in my collection.

Fear of Music, the third studio album by Talking Heads, was recorded at New York City from April to May 1979 and was produced by the group along with Brian Eno. Fear of Music reached #21 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S. and peaked at number 33 on the UK Albums Chart. The album produced three singles "Life During Wartime", "I Zimbra", and "Cities".

The album is often considered one of the best Talking Heads releases featuring the unconventional rhythms and frontman David Byrnes performances.

"Among the most adventuresome bands in rock history, the Talking Heads drew from funk, minimalism, and African and Brazilian music in promulgating a new sound that was both visionary and visceral. They were invariably challenging and inventive, using infectious rhythms as a form of sorcery to introduce their ever-expanding audience to exotic influences from abroad that they might otherwise have never heard. In so doing, they helped pave the way – along with the likes of Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno – for the “world music” phenomenon of the Eighties and beyond. They also created a body of highly original work, crowned by such albums as Fear of Music and Remain in Light, that didn’t so much appropriate its sources as transmute them into something that felt startlingly new and improbably accessible."–Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time - Rated 129/500!

1980s African-inflected Remain In Light, the Heads third album produced by Brian Eno, was the first to crack the Top 20 and introduced the signature track "Once In A Lifetime."

Formed in the mid 70s by art school chums David Byrne, Chris Franz, and Tina Weymouth - and ex-Modern Lover Jerry Harrison - Talking Heads rose out of the CBGB punk crucible and proved themselves one of the most artistically adventurous and influential bands ever. Their visionary, polyrhythmic sound fused elements including rock, funk, and punk with diverse world beats, avant-garde minimalism, and self-produced classics and on to their swan song (1988s Steve Lilywhite-produced NAKED), the Heads constantly broke creative boundaries while also scoring smart radio hits including "Burning Down the House", "Wild Wild Life", and from Remain In Light "Once In a Lifetime".

The result was a New Wave masterpiece powered by contradiction, the combined thrust of a P-Funk dance party, the ancient-to-the-future rhythm hypnosis of Nigerian funkmaster Fela Kuti and the studied adventurousness of the albums producer and Heads co-conspirator, Brian Eno. Classic Talking Heads Platinum Album Back On Vinyl!

In 2011, Ranked #54 on Rolling Stones 100 Best Albums of The Eighties!

Features 1983 Hit Single "Burning Down The House" + "Girlfriend Is Better" & "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)"!

The groups fifth studio album, released in 1983, proved to become their commercial breakthrough producing their first American Top 10 single, "Burning Down The House".

"The bands playful side indeed shines through on the albums nine songs, which include such tracks as the wobbly "Making Flippy Floppy," the animated "Girlfriend Is Better" and the cheery "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)." For all its lightheartedness, however, the album still managed to fuse the bands disparate musical interests, most notably the Afro-funk that Byrne had led the band to explore on its preceding album, Remain in Light, and the dance-oriented sounds that drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth had pursued with the Tom Tom Club. And years of touring had given the Heads a sense of how to craft songs that would appeal to their audience."- RollingStone, April 2011

On March 5, 2012, Slant Magazine listed Talking Heads "Speaking In Tongues" as#89 on their list of Best Albums of the 1980s.

"If the title of the Talking Heads sixth album found them embracing their lyrical Dadaism with an almost religious zealotry, and if the titles mission statement is more than fulfilled in the likes of "Moon Rocks" ("I ate a rock from the moon/Got shicked once, shocked twice") and "Girlfriend Is Better" (where "Stop making sense" became a mantra), its also worth noting that the tunes were counter intuitively accessible like never before, no more so than "Burning Down the House," which set fire to no wave and planted one of the many seeds for new wave."Slant Magazine, March 5, 2012

"Speaking in Tongues, Talking Heads first studio release in three years, is the album that finally obliterates the thin line separating arty white pop music and deep black funk. Picking up where their 1980 Afro-punk fusion Remain in Light left off, this LP consummates the Heads marriage of art-school intellect and dance-floor soul. Imbued with an adventurous spirit thats as close to Televisions Marquee Moon as it is to Michael Jacksons Thriller, Grand Master Flashs "The Message" and Nigerian high-life music, Speaking in Tongues gives new meaning to the word crossover - 5 1/2 Stars"- rollingstone, David Fricke, June 9, 1983

"...Despite their formal power, Talking Heads preceding two albums seemed to have painted them into a corner, which may be why it took them three years to craft a follow-up, but on Speaking in Tongues, they found an open window and flew out of it."- allmusic

Brian Eno & David Byrne My Life In the Bush of Ghosts 2LP SET THIS IS THE ORIGINAL COLLECTORS 2006 NONESUCH RECORDS RELEASE NOT THE RE-PRESS - COLLECTORS NOTE: THE LP HAS THE ORIGINAL RELEASE MARKETING STILL STILL ATTACHED ON THE FRONT.

With its “found” vocals, cut-and-paste arrangements, funked-up rhythms and embrace of influences from all around the globe, the duo’s controversial work anticipated the creative cross-pollination and technological innovation of contemporary electronic dance music, world music, hip hop and alternative rock. You can hear echoes of My Life in the Bush of Ghosts in the anthems Moby built around vintage vocal samples, in the outrageously exotic beats of Missy Elliot and Timbaland, in the Middle Eastern-accented chill-out tracks of Thievery Corporation or Bjork’s otherworldly soundscapes.

Upon initial release critics were divided and audiences were, well, confused. Eno and Byrne themselves didn’t know quite what they were looking for at first. They shared an enthusiasm for African music, especially the hypnotic grooves of Nigerian Fela Kuti, and a desire to free themselves from the constraints of conventional songwriting. They embarked on a nomadic journey through studios in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The players who accompanied them on these sessions included drummers Chris Frantz (Talking Heads) and Prairie Prince (The Tubes), bassist Bill Laswell (Material) and Tim Wright (DNA), avant-garde percussionist Dave Van Teighem and conga player Steve Scales, part of the Remain In Light live band. The result of their labors was an album that married West African and American R&B rhythms with the impassioned voices of talk-show hosts and evangelists taped off the radio or the evocative sound of prayerful singers culled from Middle Eastern field recordings. Byrne recalls their entire
adventure in fascinating liner notes that detail the recording process and address the resulting critical furor. My Life in the Bush of Ghosts was cut between Talking Heads’ Fear of Music (1979) and Remain In Light (1980), but sample clearance issues, an almost unheard-of-problem in the analog era, kept it on hold until 1981.

This updated, 180 gram, double LP edition is fully remastered, includes seven unreleased tracks from the original recording session and six multi track selections. The bonus material includes tracks that had been considered for but never made it to the original LP and a smart, informative historical /critical essay by author-musicologist-recording artist David Toop. Also featured are various drum, vocal and ambient multitracks on Side 4.

Back in 1980, Eno and Byrne were fomenting musical evolution, but wound up triggering a sonic revolution. With My Life in the Bush of Ghosts they had stumbled onto the future.

LASTLY THE RARE OUT OF PRINT DAVID BYRNE & ST. VINCENT LOVE THIS GIANT LIMITED EDITION LP

Detailed Description
Former Talking Heads Leader, David Byrne + St. Vincent! Explosive Brass! Brainy, Wild, Passionate!

David Byrne, former leader of Talking Heads, & St. Vincent, former member of The Polyphonic Spree, have released their album, Love This Giant. Recorded over two years, largely at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ, the album is a collaboration in the truest sense of the word, with Byrne and St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) co-writing ten of the album’s twelve tracks, and each artist penning one song individually. The album centers around an explosive brass band and is propelled by John Congleton’s drum programming.“There was no delineating what the roles were,”explains Clark of the recording.“It’s a collaboration I’m truly proud of.”The record favors idiosyncratic horn arrangements over traditional guitar/drum/bass lineup while maintaining a hook-laden rock sound.

Love This Giant developed like many a New York City-bred friendship. Both parties are kind of hazy about how it began, but after a couple of semi-chance encounters, David Byrne and Annie Clark, who records and performs as St. Vincent, embarked upon a creative dialogue that has flourished over the last three years. Curious, mutually appreciative acquaintances became determined co-conspirators, and the result is an album that’s brash and, quite literally, brassy. Byrne and Clark spin their intriguingly enigmatic tales, by turns whimsical and dark, backed by a large brass band in lieu of a traditional rock lineup. There is a magical urbanity to Love This Giant: It’s as if they’re dancing in the streets, their voices soaring over the rhythms, the melodies, the barely contained cacophony of the city.

Though Byrne and Clark each have an unmistakable sound and persona that have made them such compelling performers on their own, their voices manage to blend naturally, effortlessly, here. Sometimes they trade verses; at others they sing in unison. Like friends who can finish each other’s sentences, when one takes the spotlight alone, it’s often with words that the other provided. The brass lends the songs an appealing theatrical sheen while programmed percussion provides a contemporary feel. Though there’s no overarching theme to Love This Giant, surreal images of nature dominate the lyrics, most of which were worked on in tandem by Byrne and Clark. The threat of natural disaster promises an emotional epiphany; urban apocalypse gives way to a garden party.

The album, Byrne feels, might surprise those who assume the pair simply gathered a bunch of tunes they wanted to record together. Love This Giant truly became more than the sum of its parts:“It’s going to be confusing to some people. They will think, as people do, that the person who is singing the song wrote the song. In most cases, the gestation of the music and the words was very collaborative. ‘The Forest Awakes,’ for example, was a song that I originally was singing, and I had written the words. But then I thought it might sound less pretentious if Annie sings it. Her vocal quality will put a different spin on it, a little bit of lightness. And most of the tracks are like that, very collaborative.”

“It was incredibly interesting to see how David works and realize how I work as a result of ricocheting my ideas off another person,”Clark admits.“It’s a fun collaboration, for a lot of reasons. David is always looking to the future of music, and he’s not nostalgic about anything. People tend to think of nostalgia as a sweet notion, but I think it’s a little cynical, as if what happened in the past is better than what can happen in the future. People can end up just doing these genres studies. I’m not interested in doing that and neither is David, so we kept pushing each other.”

"Its not surprising that David Byrne and St. Vincents Annie Clark were drawn to work together. While theyre hardly sound-alikes, they are both keen but somewhat detached observers of the human condition who make music thats equally cerebral and passionate...For all the braininess and wildness on display, theres also a sweetness to the album, particularly on Outside of Space and Time, which sings the praises of physics-defying devotion. Given all the things Byrne and Clark pack into Love This Giant, its a remarkably catchy and concise set of songs featuring some of the most vibrant work that either one of them has produced. "- Heather Phares, allmusic

"This pair of wonderfully hard-to-define talents, who over a three-year gestation period seem to have found a glorious common ground for songwriting and harmonizing, has succeeded in fashioning an utterly original shard of brass-band-meets-layers-of-drum-programming, all of it overflown by the delicate voice of Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, and the recognizable keen of the Talking heads former big-suited frontman, David Byrne... Byrne and Clark each has just the kind of curious, offbeat, artistic sensibility needed to actually make an angular art-rock project like this a crashing, tuneful, uncommonly bright success... Literally every track is a fascinating study in how to provocatively and ingeniously incorporate horns into edgy art-rock tracks... Repeated listens reveal this music to be so intricate that its actually incredible that it only took three years to create. Blow on!"- Robert Baird, Stereophile, December 2012, Editors Pick: Recording of the Month

Remain in Light marked Talking Heads transformation from avatars of the punk avant-garde to polyrhythmic magicians with hit-single appeal. Just try not dancing to "Once in a Lifetime."- rollingstone
