*Alexander Calder (1898 -1976) was an American sculptor who used his engineering degree to create kinetic "mobiles," a designation coined by Marcel Duchamp using the French word for motion. Calder also created monumental, free-standing, abstract sculptures which Jean Arp named "stabiles" to differentiate stationary works of art. Calder was prolific, designing sets and costumes in addition to his work as a painter, illustrator, and print maker.Today, his works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Tate Gallery in London.
