This limited edition color lithograph, titled “Thy Love is Better Than Wine” fromthe portfolio suite “Song of Songs of King Solomon”, is by the French artist Theo Tobiase, who is known as one of themasters of the Paris School. The lithograph is signed in pencil by the artistbelow the image in the margin lower right: theo tobiasse. The lithographis numbered in pencil below the image in the margin lower left: 193/200.The image size of the lithograph measures 25 3/4 x 19 1/2 inches. Thelithograph is printed on Arches wove paper with deckle edge on the right andbottom sides. The full sheet measures 29 15/16 x 21 7/8 inches. The sheet alsobears the Leon Amiel blind embossed seal in the lower left margin corner. Thelithograph comes unframed.
PLEASE NOTE CONDITION: There is evidence ofheavy toning to the sheet front (mat window openarea), and the verso has hinge remnants at the top and side edges, otherwisethe lithograph image is in very good condition with no evidence of any damageto the image.
Théo Tobiasse, born in Israel in 1927, froma Lithuanian-Jewish immigrant family who moved to Paris in 1931. Here Tobiassecompleted an apprenticeship at the École des Arts Décoratifs, which wasinterrupted by the outbreak of World War II. After the end of the war, heworked as a graphic designer for the Hermès company in Paris and Nice for 15years. After his first successful exhibition appearance in Nice, he decided topursue a career as a freelance artist. His work, which was inspired by theNouvelle École de Paris, quickly found international recognition and won awardssuch as the Dorothy Gould Prize in 1961. Tobiasse decided then to devotehimself to painting. In 1976 he moved his studio to Saint-Paul-de-Vence, andfrom 1980 he traveled regularly to New York, where he stayed for several monthseach year. The paintings and prints by Théo Tobiasse, comparable to those byMarc Chagall, often contain themes from Jewish culture, contain allusions tobiblical content and deal with erotic fantasies.
