Four plays by Sir Richard Steele, the Irish writer, playwright, and politician who co-founded the literary magazine The Tatler in 1709, and with Joseph Addison co-founded The Spectator in 1711.
The first work present here is the 1751 edition of The Conscious Lovers, illustrated with an engraved frontispiece. ESTC Citation No. T128915
The second play is the 1730 sixth edition of The funeral: or, grief a-la-mode. ESTC Citation No. N18429
The third is the 1734 sixth edition of The Tender Husband, illustrated with a frontispiece. ESTC Citation No. T141139
The fourth and final work is the 1747 edition of The Lying Lover: or, the Ladies Friendship, based upon Le Menteur by Pierre Corneille. ESTC Citation No. T38793
A lovely collection of mid eighteenth century editions of the comedy plays of Steele, offering a rich insight into his writing and style.
CONDITION
Rebacked, in a full calf binding with original boards restored. Boards detached, but present. Internally, firmly bound. Pages significantly age toned, but generally clean, with only the odd spot. Inscription to head of Conscious Lovers title page.
