TOM LEWSEY BOATS IN CHERBOURG HARBOUR 1950s SOCIETY OF MARINE ARTISTS - FINE QUALITY IMPRESSIONIST OIL PAINTING
A beautifully impressive atmospheric oil on canvas-board painting depicting boats in Cherbourg harbour circa 1950s by leading British marine artist Tom Lewsey.
Lewsey has painted this French scene in an impressionistic style, using heavy, impasto strokes, which clearly shows a confident artist at the top of his game. Rarely has he produced better work!
The painting bears a label verso for the Society of Marine Artists, and bears the artists studio address in Snape, near Aldeburgh, Suffolk. The painting can be dated to between 1946 (when the SMA held its first exhibition) and 1956 (the period he spent in France).

Condition Report
This oil on board painting is in very good, ready-to-hang condition, with strong colours and no discernible fading or losses. It is framed in its original 1950s frame, which is also in very good order with just one or two small knicks, which are barely visible. All in all, a visually impressive piece which would make an eyecatching embellishment in any interior, both period or contemporary. It would also make the perfect gift for anyone with a love of maritime scenes.
