ca. 1900 - EARLY: "Sam Loyd / Paris" Chinese Puzzle Novelty - Antique Card
Rare = PARIS = French "Déposé" Version issued by Au Bon Marche Maison Aristide BOUCICAUT
"Par SAM LOYD. Paris." ... famous creator of mathematical puzzle problems from the end of the 19th century.
Get Off the Earth ... a famous Sam Loyd vanishment puzzle / vanishing puzzle mechanical optical illusion.
a.k.a. "Where is the Chinaman" / "The Disappearing Chinaman" etc. was first published in 1896.
The changing metamorphic images are made from a rotating circular card disk on top of a base card.
Parts of a number of men, supposed to be Chinese / "Chinamen", are on each piece; the 13 Chinese become 12.
REVERSE: 19th Century Birds Eye View of Massive Department Store / Au Bon Marché, Paris, France.
Aging Flaws: There are typical stains and scuffs for cards removed from Victorian albums. Shown in photos.
NOTE: I will be listing some FABULOUS Au Bon Marché French Department Store cards.
No Victorian Trade Card Collection is complete without a few examples of these cards, many of which
were issued at World Fair Expositions, and thus ended up in the collections of traveling Americans.
These stunning cards came to the U.S. where they inspired and raised the bar for American lithographers.

SETS ? - Because most American collectors are less interested in completing the countless sets of
cards issued by European companies like Au Bon Marché / Liebig / Cibils / Suchard, and the like,
I seldom list cards by the complete set, but I rather list cards individually so collectors may "Cherry Pick"
cards of particular interest for topical or aesthetic appeal, say a Clown or Sports image, vs "Set" interest.
I will not attempt to translate the French, nor to catalogue these cards by titles, specifics or set numbers.
I will price cards based upon actual past sales, my estimate of theme and topical demand, condition, etc.
