ANTIQUE COPPER MEASURING POT NEPAL

This old pot was used for measuring rice or barley or other products in Nepal before the time that scales were used for weighing rice etc... The reason it has a line round the middle was for measuring halves. To verify that it was a genuine piece, it had a stamp from the government known as "The Kings stamp", & you can see this near the top. In 1980 when we trekked around Annapurna, the now famous Thorung La pass trek, these were still very much in use, & we stopped to drink some Chang, millet beer, in a roadside halt, & some traders had brought up rice from the South, & we watched as they counted in a sing song voice, in Tibetan, "And this is one, & then we are two, & now we are three, & next is four" & so on until they got up to about eighty.. It was a wonderful trek, Thorung La is 17,795 feet, & Rachel & I were so happy & exhausted when we reached the top, we shouted "Lya Gallo" which sort of means, "Victory to the Gods", & threw our katas(prayer scarfs) on the cairn. The pot is 9 1/2" in diameter at the top, 6" at the bottom & 4 1/2" tall..
